Francois Houdé

Au cours des années, l’Association du verre d’art du Canada (GAAC) a remis des prix honorifiques à des membres qui se sont dévoués pour la communauté des verriers ainsi qu’à des membres pour l’ensemble de leur carrière. Les lauréats précédents étaient Gilles Desaulniers, Ben Goodman, Elena Lee, Joe et Anna Mendel, Dan Crichton (posthume), Laura Donefer et Norman Faulkner. 

Cette année, le Prix de l’engagement est remis à François Houdé (postume) et Ronald Labelle pour leur travail en tant que verriers cofondateurs d’Espace VERRE. Malheureusement, François est décédé en 1993 et le Congrès du GAAC à Montréal en 1996 était dédié à sa mémoire. Ronald contribute encore à maintenir le rêve initial en siégeant au conseil d’administration d’Espace VERRE. Ces deux personnes ont travaillé très fort pour développer la richesse et la créativité du verre d’art au Québec, et leurs efforts continuent d’enrichir la communauté à l’échelle nationale. 

Kevin Lockau est le lauréat 2010 du Prix pour l’ensemble d’une carrière. Kevin est l’exemple parfait d’un artiste qui fait très peu de compromis dans son travail. Il ne s’est jamais limité aux techniques et aux approches traditionnelles. De plusieurs manières, il se considère comme un étranger qui observe de loin, tout en restant une « bête sociale ». Il n’a pas besoin d’être compétitif, de juger, d’être prétentieux car il peut se confronter aux autres sur différentes orientations, sur la perte des valeurs ou pour ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives sur d’anciennes valeurs.

Lifetime Service and Lifetime Achievement Awards for 2010 

Over the years the Glass Art Association of Canada has honoured very special members of the community for the efforts that they have made which have been for the benefit of our community, and we have also honoured artists within our community for the work that they have created. Past honorees include Gilles Desaulniers, Ben Goodman, Elena Lee, Joe and Anna Mendel, Dan Crichton (posthumously), Laura Donefer, and Norman Faulkner. 

This year the Lifetime Service Award honours the two glass artists, cofounders of Espace VERRE, François Houdé (posthumously) and Ronald Labelle. Sadly, François passed away in 1993 and the 1996 GAAC Conference was dedicated to his memory. Ronald continues to work to maintain the dream by sitting on the Board of Directors of Espace VERRE. They both dedicated many years and a great amount of energy to help nurture the richness and the creativity of the Québec glass art community and by doing so their efforts continue to enhance the national community.

Kevin Lockau is this years’ recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. Kevin is a prime example of an artist that makes very few concessions in his work. He has never allowed himself to be restricted by techniques and traditional approaches. In many ways he considers himself an outsider looking at things from a distance, but he still remains a “social animal”, one that, without having to be competitive, judgmental or pretentious, can afford to confront his peers with different perspectives, point out some lost values or open new perceptions on old standards.
